1st Call for Papers

The 7th International Symposium on

Pedagogical Lexicography and L2 Teaching and Learning

 (6-8 November 2020/Huaqiao University, China)

The launch of the Belt and Road Initiative has not only rekindled the zeal for Chinese learning around the world but also reignited Chinese people’s enthusiasm for learning foreign languages. This has posed both opportunities and challenges for practitioners (lexicographers, linguists, language teachers and publishers) in second language teaching and learning, for while they are encouraged by the booming market, they have to change their minds and practices to satisfy the increasingly diversified and individualized needs of the language learners. ‘The dictionary is the most successful and significant book language’ (Ilson 1985). A well-designed learner’s dictionary will greatly facilitate L2 teaching and learning. Although it has long been recognized that ‘dictionaries should be designed with a special set of users in mind’ (Householder 1967), empirical efforts in this direction seem far from satisfactory. This is especially the case in China as evident in the lack of country-specific dictionaries for learners of Chinese as a second/foreign language and foreign language dictionaries specifically designed for Chinese learners. The important role of the dictionary in L2 teaching and learning calls for a renewed discussion on how pedagogical lexicography and linguistics can contribute to facilitating L2 teaching and learning, especially in the age of media convergence.

The 7th International Symposium on Pedagogical Lexicography and L2 Teaching and Learning (PL&LTL 2020) aims to attract contributions concerning the intersection of lexicography and L2 teaching and learning. It is an opportunity for dialogues between theorists and practitioners in lexicography, between L1 and L2 lexicographers/teachers, and between Chinese and international scholars in lexicography and L2 teaching and learning. By bringing together worldwide scholars in lexicography, SLA, linguistics, language teaching/learning as well as dictionary publishing, this interdisciplinary symposium also seeks to keep participants update with new theories and practices in dictionary making and in using dictionaries to improve L2 teaching and learning.

The Symposium is sponsored by Chinalex Bilingual Commission, the Commercial Press, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, and Shanghai Translation Publishing House, which are the leading lexicographical research and publishing institutions in China and it is organized by College of Foreign Languages, Huaqiao University.

The Organizing Committee of the Symposium welcomes papers which address the interface between theory and practice in pedagogical lexicography and L2 teaching and learning. Papers on country-specific learner’s dictionaries are especially encouraged. Worldwide renowned scholars will be invited to make keynote speeches at the Symposium.

Topics of the Symposium (include but are not limited to)

1. (Country-specific) learner’s dictionary research, compiling and publishing in the age of media convergence

2. Digital and multimodal dictionaries for L2 teaching and learning

3. Digital and multimodal technology in developing learner's dictionaries

4. Corpus and pedagogical lexicography

5. Dictionaries, cultures and ideologies: Lexicographical theory and practice

Note: An exhibition of dictionaries and lexicographic works will be orchestrated during the Symposium. Dictionary publishers, lexicographers and linguists are welcome to send their works to the Organizing Committee (bring them here) for the exhibition.
